Dorm & Camp Rules
宿舍守則
I. The Summer Portal Virtues
Be Respectful. As in any learning community, showing respect to teachers and tutors is expected. Here at the Summer Portal, you are equally expected to respect one another and all helping staff. Last but not least, show respect to yourself. Any disrespectful behaviour will be dealt with seriously and the most serious offence may result in exclusion from camp activities.
Be a Ready Learner. Bring this Passport with you to all activities and take notes as these magical moments of learning occur. Needless to say, a pencil is an indispensable companion. A “Ready Learner” is also someone who has an open mind, and is willing to try new things, make new friends and learn from one another. Most importantly, be punctual. The stated times of the activities are the starting times, not the times you start making your way to the venue. (Remember that there is only one moderately-sized elevator serving the dormitory floors.) Last but not least, be ready to have fun!
Disciplinary Sanctions. If you are found to be in violation of these two virtues, a member of staff will talk to you about what happened, and explain to you why your behaviour is unacceptable. The Summer Portal reserves the right, where appropriate, to exclude a student from any activity for a period of time for self-reflection. The following sanctions are in place to deal with disciplinary matters:
-
First Warning. You will be given a verbal warning by the Portal Director or Portal Guardian.
-
Second Warning. You will be given a written second warning by the Portal Director or Portal Guardian and your parents will be informed of the situation. You will be reminded that one more incident of any such unacceptable behaviour will result in exclusion.
-
Exclusion. Your parents will be asked to take you home. The Summer Portal reserves the right, at the discretion of the Portal Director, to administer an immediate exclusion for serious breaches of discipline.
II. Dress Code
As fashionable as some of these following items may be, they are not deemed to be appropriate in a learning environment and among a community of learners: slippers (except on dormitory floors) or sandals, sleeveless tops (except when playing sports), and miniskirts or shorts, and baseball caps/ hats. Proper and appropriate sports shoes must be worn when entering the Indoor Games Hall.
III. Facilities and Common Areas
For your own safety, you are expected to remain within the designated areas on campus, including the classrooms, activity venues and common spaces specifically reserved for the Summer Portal. Venturing into any other areas of the campus or outside of campus is strictly prohibited, unless when accompanied by a member of staff.
In the dormitory, Portalians are placed in three-bed, six-bed, or eight-bed dormitories. There are two Common Rooms, located on 9/F and 11/F, with each one adjoined to 10/F and 12/F respectively. The Common Rooms are the only places for social gathering. You are not otherwise allowed to go to a floor other than your own, unless permission is given by a member of staff. You are also not allowed to enter any room other than your own. There is one gender-specific bathroom on each floor. You may have to go a different floor for showering, and will be instructed to do so by a member of staff.
IV. Security
Dormitory rooms cannot be locked by design, though you will be assigned a desk with a drawer that can be locked. (Take good care in keeping the key for the duration of your stay, for there is a replacement cost of $100 in case of loss!) CCTV cameras are also installed in and around the communal areas and entrances of the dormitory to safeguard your security as well as your properties. Please take all reasonable steps to safeguard your own personal belongings. The Summer Portal cannot be held liable for any loss or damage to any personal property beyond its reasonable duty of care.
V. Safety & Emergency
For your own safety, do not attempt to climb over the balcony, or the glass dividers along the balcony. Do not throw any object from a height.
In the event of a fire, the person discovering the occurrence of a fire should notify the Dormitory Officer or any supervising adult immediately. Where possible, activate the fire alarm bell by accessing the nearest manual call point, and notify the Fire Services Department by calling 2522 0367 or 999. On hearing a fire alarm, go to the designated assembly point by following one of the evacuation routes stated in the Emergency Evacuation Plan posted on the door of your room, close the door as you exit and wait for a roll call by a member of staff at the assembly point.
Evacuation Routes
Assembly Point
Take Southern Staircase (ST-06) going down
MacDonnell Road on 4/F
Take Northern Staircase (ST-07) going down
Calder Path on M/F
Except in the case of a fire, Portalians are allowed to use the elevator, but they must do so with at least one other person. In the unlikely event that you are trapped inside the elevator, press the emergency button and use the intercom to seek help.
VI. Community-mindedness and Respect
By entering the Summer Portal, you have become a member of this community where mutual respect is expected and upheld. As such, you shall abide by the following community norms:
-
Be kind to your roommates and share space equally.
-
Exercise common courtesy and keep the dormitory clean and tidy as you would like to find them. Clean up after your own mess, whether it is in the bathroom or the Common Room.
-
Exercise proper care when using dormitory facilities and properties. Do not remove or relocate furniture without permission. Report any damage or loss of property immediately.
-
Empty your room’s trash bin into the Common Room’s garbage bin when it is 80% filled up, not 130%.
-
Help protect the environment by using water, gas and electricity efficiently. Turn off the lights and air-conditioning when leaving your room for a long duration.
-
Keep your showering time to no more than 15 minutes (without compromising hygiene). Not only would Mother Nature appreciate your conservation of water, but your fellow Portalians would also appreciate not having to miss their Teddy Bear time before going to bed.
-
Cooking is strictly prohibited in the dormitory room, no matter how good a chef you may be! Consumption of food and drinks other than water are best carried out in the Common Room.
VII. Schedule, Room Inspection & Meals
-
You must return to your own room by 10.30pm at the latest, and should not leave the room again thereafter except when nature calls. A room inspection will be carried out by a member of staff to ensure that you get proper and adequate rest for the activities in the following day. Those not found to be in their room during inspection will have to explain themselves and may be subject to disciplinary action.
-
You must not enter any room in the dormitory other than your own.
-
Quiet Time is observed strictly from 10.30pm to 7.30am; at other times, do mind your noise level as you now live in a community of many.
-
A morning call is usually set for 7.30am. Setting your own alarm clock is more than welcome, especially for those deep sleepers and sweet dreamers.
-
The resident staff and dormitory officers reserve the right to enter the dormitory rooms they supervise for unannounced room inspections as they see fit.
-
All meals are served in the Cafeteria on 1/F of the Li Chong Yuet Ming Building unless otherwise stated. Meal times are considered to be important occasions for social interaction in ancient times, in Chinese culture and also here at the Summer Portal! Please bear in mind the Portal’s virtue of being respectful. Pajamas are not considered to be fashionable in the Cafeteria – you will be turned away. Please pay attention to proper table manners, cherish food and clear your food tray after each meal.
VIII. Health Protocols
-
All Portalians must practice good personal hygiene throughout the camp.
-
You should inform a member of staff of any illness or symptoms immediately.
-
You should wear a surgical mask if you are experiencing cold-like symptoms.
-
The Summer Portal may implement additional health and safety protocols as recommended by authorities.
IX. Mobile Phone Policy and Wi-fi
You are here at the Summer Portal to interact with people, forge friendships and have meaningful conversations face-to-face. The use of mobile phones are therefore restricted to specific times and places, as will be announced prior to the camp. Anyone found to be in violation of the prevailing mobile phone policy will have their devices temporarily confiscated and may be subject to further disciplinary action.
Complimentary Wi-fi is available in the dormitory. Sign-in details will be given to you during orientation. Please exercise proper cyberspace safety and “netiquette”.
X. Check Out
Upon check out, it is your duty to return your room to the same condition as you found it. Please ensure that you return the drawer key by inserting it back into the lock in the drawer. Check your room thoroughly to ensure that you do not leave any personal belongings behind. We do not guarantee a happy reunion with your lost items if they are left behind; and any items left unclaimed 48 hours after check-out will be either discarded or donated to charities.

i. 所有學生都需要在營地保持良好個人衛生。
ii. 如果學生身體不適或出現任何病徵,應該立即通知暑期學校職員。
